Byzantine

It is generally accepted that the Byzantine Period begins with the establishment by Constantine the Great of the East Roman or Byzantine Empire in AD 303. Constantine is also linked with the the establishment of Christianity as the Official State Religion. The early Byzantine period therefore is mainly concerned with the gradual growth of the Christian Church. In particular there is a focus on such figures as the Cypriot Saints, St. Spyridon and St. Hilarion.

Another significant Christian episode from this time is the landing of St. Helena, with part of the True Cross and her foundation of Stavravouni Monastery. There were other religious exertions during this period that to modern eyes appear very dry and academic. In particular whether Cyprus was an Apostolic Church foundation under St. Barnabas or was under the sway of the Archbishopric of Antioch. The other great issue of the day was the schism between the Orthodox and Monophysite doctrines.
